Sam Alfred‘s debut on it’s subsidiary Misfit Melodies melts the old with the new, swings the hips with the hits and unites the past with the future. The man with the adorable underground white label mp3 Shine II Dawn under his belt, is not only a DJ to die for, but also a witty, interesting and most of all enchanting studio talent. Aptly titled Roadblocks, this 5-track-EP once more underlines his appeal: his-speed house and sprinkles of retro rave meet the melodies of tomorrow.
While My Heart and Back To sound like Strictly Rhythm tracks played by UK Garage DJs, Drift and Fortune are prime examples of Sam‘s production powers. last, but not least the title track is the result of a trip to Dekmantel and a nod to the proggy bounce of the 90s. The Grouse approaches, intent on witnessing Helium Robots release the ghouls and demons from their machines. What potent mix can this mean? Channeling the raw energy of their 2018 track Sly on Running Back, the monolithic baselines and surging, dense forces of Defy Me and The Grouse itself unfurl from the speakers. To mop fevered brows after those torrents, the alchemy changes to create the fuzzy warmth and bounce of Pang. Playful vocal samples flicker and weave through the chords, giving way to the final melodic flow of Revel. And we’re done. The Grouse, unruffled, proudly turns and stalks away……

With the second record for Misfit Melodies and the fourth for the Running Back universe, Robert Dietz solidifies and hones his very own sound. Heartfelt and emotive, a slice of lovers acid works as the prelude to an EP of IDM patterns, classic house tropes and something that is as much fun as it is funky. “Great Hormones at Bed Time” owes the same amount of money to Detroit as it does to Frankfurt am Main. Definitely no lullabies here.
